Kombies to NUST a "life hazard"

Commuter omnibus operators on the NUST-Town route seem to be highly ignorant of the safety of their valued clients.

The kombies they provide are too old for the road and are no-longer in their original condition. Only a few loads fuel in the actual fuel tanks as most of them now operate from the 2 liter and 5 liter containers hanging outside the engine.

Most of them are now operating on jump start and this is a risk to NUST students who rely on these kombies for daily transport.

Just a day ago, one of these kombies caught fire and it was burnt to ashes serve for the frames of the body. Passengers had to fly out with their lives through the windows after they realised the are in a life threatening situation.

Almost all of these combies have oil leakages and some don't even have windows. Surprisingly, they are driven at a reckless speed and we wonder if they are driven by rational people.

To make matters worse, some of these drivers will be drunk and they don't care what happens to who because of their behaviour.

SRC, should do something about this because i'm sure they have such powers.

  1. I agree with you Mr Tendai, SRC should do something quickly to serve lives or else we will gather very soon crying some of our colleagues because our lives are in danger now. i also think that there should be codes of conduct in which those drivers operate within. They abuse students, shout students particularly for those who come outside Matebeleland and do not speak the local language. At one point one of them asked us that, "ko kuHarare hakuna chikoro?" simply because we were speaking in Shona. Codes of conduct are needed, we are academics and we can not be treated like that by some individuals who need money from us. We don't get in town mahara, we pay and we have got every right to enjoy our money.
Additional the police has to do their work honestly. That kombi had no fire extinguisher but on roadblocks, the police just let it go. In fact most of them do not have fire extinguishers, that is why it was reduced to ashes and nothing was done to stop the fire by any of the drivers. That again shows that, those drivers do not have licenses. They had never been at any diving school so they don't know anything about what to do if the car start burning.

  2. Its sad..but my opinions still circle around the fact that..as Mahatma Gandhi said `be the difference that you want to see in the world`. If we think we are this good, then, lets stop stooping that low ndichikwira makombi acho. But bottom line is that...if we accept the situation it will remain the same.So i want to challenge myself and say...what ill in society am i going to stand up and say `This has got to change` and pursue the change with boldness and purpose.
